H&M Fall 2011 Women’s Lookbook

I hate the cold weather but I LOVE the fashion. Layering all those great sweaters, the boots, etc…. And H&M looks like it will again be my go-to location for all the best at the best prices. What are you guys lusting? 😉

“I’m particularly fond of this collection because it’s so easy to wear, so grown up and yet totally of the moment and with such great fashion attitude. Most pieces are fashion classics updated with a new silhouette or shape or simply new styling,” says H&M’s Head of Design Ann-Sofie Johansson.

For Fall 2011, H&M is all about the 70′s style influence, key looks are long, loose silhouettes, with classic coats in camel teamed with patterned dresses and wide pants, mixing retro styles with a modern twist. The color palette is warm like camel, cognac, burgundy, pumpkin and brown, as well as uniform-inspired colors, muted jewel tones and cream. If you like patterns, there’s tweeds, florals, paisley and checks. Key pieces are classic coats, including a parka, faux fur, blazer, tailored pants, knee-length skirt, blouse, poncho and chunky knits.

Trend Report: Tribal-Print Skirts

Much like switching to bright nail polish or embracing a steady rotation of summery skirts, my infatuation with bold, tribal-print pieces inevitably emerges when we transition into warmer months—and for good reason! Designers consistently come up with new and refreshing ways to incorporate these indigenous motifs into our spring wardrobes, whether they’re rendering these prints in hyper-bright color palettes, paring them with punk or utilitarian accents, or emblazoning them on our favorite separates. Today, our focus is on the latter, specifically: tribal-print skirts. It doesn’t matter if they’re mini or maxi, these essential items give any ensemble plenty of visual intrigue and have a cool, global-wanderer vibe that feels perfect for spring. Accordingly, I’ve rounded up some top-notch runway references and a few of my fav celebrity looks—including Mary-Kate Olsen and Margherita Missoni—to demonstrate all the reasons why this is a must-try trend this season!

But before I break down the celebrity iterations of this trend, let’s discuss its nuances. For the past few years, designers have given us extremely assertive tribal prints, often created digitally and produced in acid hues—but that’s not on the menu right now. Chalk it up to the season’s spotlight on all things ’70s and bohemian, but the current trend is decidedly earthier and more organic. That doesn’t mean you need to break out your caftans and dashikis though, as today’s skirt-centric focus offers a more modern approach to wearing these African, South American, and Indonesian-influenced prints. For example, at Etro I spotted a gorgeous selection of batik-style separates, like the Silk Tribal Skirt ($825, 212.317.9096), which was expertly-paired with the Cotton Embroidered Peasant Top with Cut Out Shoulders ($2850, 212.317.9096), resulting in luxuriously chic mix of patterns and textures. Additionally, I was over the moon for Diane von Furstenberg’s fantastic display of graphic-prints, especially the eye-popping motif on the ankle-grazing skirt featured above. While the Etro prints mentioned have a traditional look, I like how this particular pattern offers a more playful and modern alternative.

One of the great things about these bold skirts is that there are so many ways you can transition them into your wardrobe! If this is your first time wearing these eye-catching patterns, I suggest taking a page from Keira Knightley and Harley Viera-Newton’s stylebooks and let the print take center stage. For example, Knightley outside the Comedy Theatre in London wearing a Suno multi-colored skirt with a basic black top, Rick Owens leather jacket, suede Acne boots, and tights.  At the CFDA celebration party at J. Crew in New York, Viera-Newton wore Herve Leger’s Claudine Geometric Jacquard Skirt ($1150) with Maje’s Epice Black Top ($241) and Office ankle boots. I’m also fond of the way one stylish civilian on Street Peeper addressed this trend by styling her print skirt with a blazer and lace-up shoes for an unexpected, pseudo-preppy outfit. Again, it’s important to note that each of these ladies made their skirts the focal point of their looks by styling them with simple, understated pieces in neutral tones.

If you’re feeling a little bit more daring, try incorporating some texture into your ensemble a la Mary-Kate Olsen and Taylor Tomasi Hill. Snapped out in Paris last month, Olsen opted to style her Balenciaga Resort 11 skirt and Cutout Boots ($1275, 310.452.4070) with a furry coat, while Marie Claire‘s Style and Accessories Director Tomasi Hill took it one step further at the Brooklyn Museum Artists Ball a few days later, by accenting her amazing mullet-style, floral batik-print skirt—from Thakoon’s F/W 11 collection—with a pair of Alexander Wang Pre-Fall 10 fringe heels and bold bracelets. Finally, if you consider yourself an advanced dresser, turn to the queen of graphic prints—Margherita Missoni—for some smart styling ideas. The tastemaker recently caught my attention at the IFC Films screening of L’Amour Fou earlier this month when she paired a bright pleated skirt with a light blue striped top and gray zig-zag peep-toe heels—all by Missoni. The combination of prints made for the perfect high-impact look.

Fortunately, you don’t have to invest in such high-profile designer pieces to add this look into your own repertoire!  I’ve tracked down tons of alternative options that are sure to make a smash this season. If you fancy Olsen or Knightley’s tribal-print minis, we suggest checking out Myne’s Tyler Printed Skirt ($158), Georgie’s Rafina Skirt ($145), and Forever 21’s Tribal Print Skirt ($15). I also approve of Torn by Ronny Kobo’s Astrid Aztec Print Skirt ($143), which offers a more fitted silhouette similar to the styles seen at Etro. Of course, some of you might prefer a longer hemline, so I’m also including Tucker’s Flowy Long Skirt ($385) and Mara Hoffman’s Fishtail Long Skirt ($36) into the mix. My final pick is The Addison Story’s Layered Triangle Print Skirt ($112), as the neutral color combo would look excellent worn with a basic black top and simple wedges.

Trendspotting: Asian Influence

From V’s Asian Issue to the pages of Vogue UK, stylists and photographers are looking east for inspiration. I blame it on Marc Jacobs’ SS11 show for Louis Vuitton, but economists may blame it on the booming market in Asia. Whatever the reason, nothing is more en voguethan referencing the far east.

Gisele Bundchen Launches Her Own Lingerie Line

Why have a Victoria’s Secret contract when you can have your own lingerie line??? Gisele Bundchen, who left her Angel wings behind in 2007, has launched Gisele Bundchen Intimates with Brazilian company Hope, set to hit 2,000 stores May 25. Bundchen kicked off the collaboration with a runway show in Sao Paulo last night, festooned in oversized bows and feather headdresses remniscent of a VS runway.

Revealed: Chanel’s Fall 2011 Nail Colors

You long ago gave up trying to find Chanel’s must-have spring color, Black Pearl. And Mimosa is probably on the endangered species list. Well, don’t worry about it. It’s time to freak out over the new fall Chanel nail colors.

Chanel introduced Graphite on its Fall 2011 runway back in March, but this is the first time we’ve seen other colors from the collection. Sophy Robson, who is a UK-based nail artist and runs my new favorite nail art site, got her well-manicured hands on the lacquers and was kind enough to post pictures of them. Are you just dying over the Peridot? SWOON!!!….. 🙂

THE STYLISH MESSANGER BAG FOR SPRING 2011

From top left, clock wise: Hype $164.9 available at DSW, Zara $89.90, Paul & Joe $565 available at Net-a-Porter, Fossil $148 available at Macy's. Courtesy photos.

It’s no secret that the Proenza Shoulder PS1 bag is the holy grail of messenger bags.

But with a hefty price tag ranging from $895 to $14,500, ample storage space and utilitarian design it only makes sense that Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough’s masterpiece is a closet staple for the likes of Leighton Meester, Kirsten Dunst and Chloë Sevigny.

But for us common folk, there’s hope!

I’ve rounded up some of the best heavy-duty bags that hold more than just Tic Tacs and credit cards. You will instantly up your sartorial game by grabbing one when you head to work — bonus points if you’ve scheduled happy hour plans after a day at the office.

Carrie Chapman, senior buyer at Barneys New York says, “we’ve been seeing a lot of the ‘urban warrior’ trend, and crossbody styles are a big part of that.” She added, “They are functional and edgy, and can be very sophisticated.”

So,whether you’re a student looking for a stylish alternative to a book bag, or just a gal in need a cross-body purse that you could practically live out of, there’s something for everybody. Happy shopping ladies 😉

BAG SNOB X DKNY

DKNY has partnered with one of the leading authorities on handbag trends, Bag Snob, to create a limited edition collection titled “The Five Essentials,” set to debut for Resort 2011.

The relationship began in 2009, when DKNY PR girl (the brand’s Twitter personality) noticed a less than flattering tweet by Bag Snob. Rather than ignore the taunt, DKNY responded, “Haven’t you ever taken a picture of yourself that just doesn’t do you justice?” And instead of a predicable Twitter brawl, the two hashed out their differences and a seriously stylish relationship was born. (Turns out Bag Snob has been a fan of Donna Karan’s work the entire time.)

Nearly three years later the duo is premiering a line of handbags whose purpose is to fill in any wardrobe gaps a woman may have: The Travel, unassuming on the outside but filled with practical pockets on the inside; The Treasure, a ladylike purse that evokes old Hollywood glamour; The Tote, a roomy number in versatile black and navy; The Clutch, which is the perfect size for a evening on the town and features metallic sequins; and The Trendy, a leopard-printed handbag with chain-link details.

While each piece is much different from the next, there are a few common traits found among them: Each is designed with Snob-approved details — pale-gold metal feet, branded Bag Snob x DKNY raspberry jacquard nylon lining, removable shiny pale gold hangtags and outside pockets for speedy access.

Like what you see? Then head over to DKNY’s Facebook page anytime between today and June 3 to pre-reserve. The collection will hit shelves at select retailers in October.

Soludos X Opening Ceremony Collaboration

Collaborations are all too common these days, but when we discovered that Soludos founder Nick Brown was teaming up with Opening Ceremony, we knew this wasn’t just any old capsule collection.

The retailer is a fan favorite of trendsetters like Alexa ChungDiane Kruger and Zoe Kravitz. In the past, Opening Ceremony has collaborated with Chloë Sevigny, Spike Jonze, Pendleton, Levi’s, Timberland, Keds, Rodarte and more. It comes as no surprise that they tapped Brown — the New York native is a travel junkie, with a knack for updating the traditional espadrille.

What is the story behind your line and why did you choose the name Soludos?
Nick Brown:
I grew up spending summers in Spain as a kid, wearing classic jute soled espadrilles the whole time, and they’ve been on my feet ever since. They are such a summer staple in Europe but it used to be impossible to find a good pair in my current hometown of New York City. We launched Soludos in select retailers last summer in New York, Los Angeles, and the Hamptons and then down under in Australia last September.

My favorite times of the summer involve a few friends gathered over casual drinks on a lazy summer afternoon, so I wanted to try to capture that feeling in a name and to give a nod to the Spanish heritage of the shoes. With that, “saludos,” the Spanish word for “cheers,” and “sol” for sun were combined, and “Soludos” was born!

Soludos founder Nick Brown.

How did the Opening Ceremony collaboration come about?
NB:
I met with the folks at Opening Ceremony a year ago and we did a small collection of black velvet Soludos for the opening of their store at the Ace Hotel in New York. They are an incredibly cool and creative group, always eager to put a twist on the conventional and traditional way of doing things. So for this summer they designed some beautiful bold exotic print fabrics for an exclusive collection of Soludos espadrilles for Opening Ceremony stores.

What are your travel essentials?
NB: Canon G12 camera, Olasul board shorts, Soludos shoes, a notepad and a kikoy.

What is the best purchase you have made while traveling?
NB:
A rustic wooden backgammon board I bought on Elias Beach in Mykonos a few years back. I have won and lost countless games, spilled quite a few drinks, and shared so many laughs on that set. I take it everywhere with me.

Where is your favorite place to eat when you come home to NYC?
NB:
Westville is a local gem in the West Village. They have simple, delicious food and fresh produce at an honest prices. Brinkley’s in Soho for a few beers and a quick bite is hard to beat.

What is your favorite summer destination?
NB:
Definitely Mykonos, Greece. You can’t beat the energy on the White Island in June or July.

What is your soundtrack for the summer?
NB:
Quite an eclectic mix, but this is what’s on my iPod at the moment:
Miami” – Foals
Do It Again” – The Beach Boys
Satellite” – The Kills
Need You Now” – Cut Copy
Entre Dos Aguas” – Paco de Lucia

The Soludos x Opening Ceremony collection will retail for $30 and will hit the retailer’s top locations in NYC, Los Angeles, Japan and online at openingceremony.us.

Sarah Jessica Parker Puts on the Pearls for Cannes Film Festival

Remember when Carrie Bradshaw tried to live in France in the last season of Sex and the City, but returned to New York City because Big came and professed his love for her? Well, SATC star Sarah Jessica Parker is back in the country and wearing her Bradshaw best!

The fashionista let her hair down and threw on the pearls to go with her floor-length, flowing white embroidered dress as she dined at a restaurant in Antibes and later attended the Weinstein Company VIP Press Event. Parker is in France during the Cannes Film Festival along with a slew of other celebrities.

The actress must have just gotten to Europe as she was snapped earlier this week with hubby Matthew Broderick at the New York City Ballet Spring Gala. Parker looked glamorous with her hair pulled back in a long gown, while her date, Broderick, was in a classic tuxedo. The actress has been busy filming New Years Eve and I Don’t Know How She Does It around NYC.
