Fall 2011 Trend: Floppy Hat And 70’s Style Fedoras

This Fall, the perky little fedoras of seasons past get a much-needed update. Spotted at the Fall 2011 Gucci show — and on the streets of Spring 2012 Fashion Week (above) — this season’s fedora is floppier, feminine, and just a tad ’70s — perfect for adding a bit of mystique to any cold-weather ensemble. Look for wide-brimmed versions in rich hues with luxe trimmings — leather, feathers, and extra-wide ribbon look especially chic for Fall. See below to shop our picks — and make this look your own.

Versace For H&M In Motion! Check Out The Pics And Vids

We try not to encourage psychotic behavior, but we have to post these videos from the Versace for H&M show and party in NYC last night. We’re not sure what we’re more giddy about — seeing the clothes in person or seeing Prince in person (…yeah, the clothes are that good), but you can judge for yourself. Check out the two videos after the break!

Shop Fall 2011 Trends: Fair Isle Nordic Winter

Intarsia sweaters, fur-trimmed booties, and a dash of plaid — cozy up to the cold with these Nordic-inspired pieces. This season is all about texture, so don’t be afraid to mix it up and pile it on. From Rag & Bone’s tactile tartans (left) to APC’s Fair Isle knits, Winter dressing never looked so chic.

Preview Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld’s Upcoming Collaborative Book

Carine Roitfeld has dropped hints about working with Karl Lagerfeld on an upcoming book, and now there’s photographic proof. A preview — and details about the collaboration — are in the new issue of Vmagazine, on newsstands tomorrow, Nov. 9.

The project, which is still being produced, centers around the classic black Chanel tweed jacket. Lagerfeld has been shooting (and Roitfeld styling) portraits of stylish women (and a couple of men) of varying ages and occupations — think actors, models, and heiresses — wearing the jacket, in order to explore the many different ways it can be worn. “This jacket is a vital and irrational impulse open to creativity and transformation,” Lagerfeld explains, adding: “Especially in the hands of Carine Roitfeld.”

Donatella Versace Sings on the Soundtrack For Versace For H&M Show

Last night, Donatella Versace was transforming Pier 57 in New York into the “Versace For H&M Hall on the Hudson,” for the collaboration’s fashion show. Three videos by Johan Renck — one of which in previews had Lindsey Wixson running on an oversized hamster wheel — debuted during the extravaganza, both Nicki Minaj and Prince gave musical performances, and even Versace herself contributed to the show soundtrack. Her vocals — in English — were recorded for one track. “It’s the funniest thing because I can’t sing,” she laughed. “I’m going to say, ‘Nicki and Prince, your time is over. It’s all about me!’” But she was not the only Versace involved in the production — daughter Allegra, who has been taking a more active role in the company, assisted stylist Joe McKenna on fittings.

As for star power at the show, Versace presented Jennifer Lopez with her Glamour Women of the Year All-Star award last night. Versace also name-checked Kristen Stewart, Carey Mulligan, and Elizabeth Olsen as rising stars she’d like to work with. “Of course, I love Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj,” she said. “They’re not afraid to dare. It’s been a while since someone went out there and didn’t listen too much to the marketing people. You still have to listen to them but not 100 percent.”

Versace for H&M Doesn’t Go On Sale Until November 19 But Someone Is Selling It Online Already!?

20111108-192428.jpg

Yikes. The Versace for H&M frenzy has just begun, with the runway show and party featuring performances by Prince and Nicki Minaj but I just received a tip that an online Chinese retailer is already selling the full collection.

Every piece is available for sale at an online mall called Germany Street (it’s similar to a site like Amazon and sells ‘European styles’ hence the Germany connection) and the price conversions from Yuan to dollars suggest that the collection will be a bit steeper in China. The dress Abbey Lee is wearing below will retail for $149 when it is sold at H&Ms in the US in a week and a half, while the price on Taobao.com is 1470 Yuan (about $231).

Allowing that Google Translator is less than reliable (and in this case seems to translate each item of clothing a “baby” and does nothing to clarify the Germany connection), the site seems to promise that the product is genuine. Each item is shot at several angles, including look book images where available. Update: Just spoke with someone who could read the simplified Chinese on the site who confirmed that the site promises the authenticity of the garments.

So if you really want to be the first to wear Versace for H&M and you live in China, get after it. The site ships to all major cities in China.

I’ve reached out to H&M and Versace for comment about the legitimacy and legality of the line being sold and will update when I’ve heard back.

How To Wear A Vest This Fall !!

Yes—there are ways to wear a vest without looking like a casino croupier. In fact, learning to wear one is imperative in the colder months, when you want to minimize bulk but maximize warmth (while making sure not to compromise your look!). Vests come in all styles, shapes, and levels of drapey-ness, and are an integral part of every style-savvy girl’s arsenal of layering tricks. It doesn’t hurt to have one in fur, (as pictured above on Rihanna) since fur is all the rage right now!! Add this piece to your repertoire, because there’s definitely more than one way to make it feel chic this fall. And I’m about to share them all.

Mix It Into Monochrome — It’s easy to slip into a black-on-black routine in the winter. Break up all that monochrome with a contrast-colored vest.

Alexander Wang Suede Trench Vest, $995, available at Alexander Wang.

Cinch It With A Belted — A skinny belt can help define your waist and create a peplum-like effect with a drape-y vest. Wear it with your high-waisted skirts and pants.

Talbots Cascade Vest, $27.99, available at Talbots.

Cover A Sheer Top With It — Wear your see-through blouses with a chic vest over them. Just remember to keep the vest fastened in place to prevent any accidental flashing!

Akira Faux Leather Vest, $46.90, available at Akira.

Wear It Like A Wintry Scarf — We’re huge fans of poncho styles that drape over your outfit like a scarf. Wear it open, tossed over a shoulder, or as an inner layer to add some whimsy to a more structured jacket.

Forever21 Fringe Sweater Vest, $32.90, available at Forever21

Work It As An Extra Over-Layer — Use a vest to pep up a conservative outfit. A bright-colored puffer takes the square out of any blazer-and-shirt combo.

J. Crew Excursion Quilted Vest, $98, available at J. Crew.

Work It As an Extra Under-Layer — If you’re in need of some more warmth, but don’t want to add bulk to your arms, a thick vest is a stellar option. Choose a patterned one so it stands out against your jacket.

Patterson J. Kincaid Angela Fur Trim Parka/Vest, $298, available at Shopbop.
