Here’s How to Get the Margiela x H&M Collab on Thursday

2012_11_HM-margiela-windows.JPG

After months of anticipation, teaser shots, and a few strange commercials, theMargiela x H&M collaboration will finally debut this Thursday, November 15th. And even though H&M’s last collab didn’t incite that much hysteria, we’re expecting the Margiela launch to be a mob scene.

As usual, the H&M locations that are selling the collection will open at 8am. Read on for a list of which stores will stock it, what the line system will be like, and other helpful pointers to ensure that you get every drapey, asymmetrical dress your heart desires.

WHERE TO SHOP

Uptown: 125 West 125th Street; 731 Lexington Avenue at 59th Street; 150 Lexington Avenue at 86th Street; 10 Columbus Circle.
Midtown: 1328 Broadway at 34th Street; 505 Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street; 640 Fifth Avenue at 51st Street; 435 Seventh Avenue at 34th Street.
Downtown: 111 Fifth Avenue at 18th Street; 515 Broadway at Spring Street.
Queens: Queens Center Mall, 90-15 Queens Boulevard.

WHEN TO GET THERE
As I mentioned above, the stores that are carrying the collection will open bright and early at 8am. For argument’s sake, let’s compare this to the Versace for H&M launch. As you may recall, the first person to show up at the Fifth Avenue flagship did so a full twenty-two hours in advance. And by 4:30am, there was an actual line. I, on the other hand, arrived at 7am, and was given a wristband to shop the collection at 1:45pm. Basically, if you’re hoping to get in and get out before noon, consider arriving around 6am. Or you can stay in and sleep and just wait for eBay—whichever.

WHAT TO KNOW
Here’s how the line will work: The first 420 people there will get a colored bracelet. There are 14 different colors, and each will go to a group of 30. Each group will get fifteen minutes to shop, so it’d be a good idea to figure out what you want to buy ahead of time (more on that later). Also, to prevent the entire collection from getting wiped out in one fell swoop, shoppers will not be allowed to buy more than four pieces of one particular item. Which means you can buy as many dresses as you want, but you can only buy the same dress four times.

WHAT TO RUN TO FIRST
Since time will be really, really limited, you should definitely scan the entire 123-piece lookbook in advance. As for the clothing, I’m expecting the dresses to go fast, particularly the ones included in the campaigns (like the asymmetrical red and the drape-y blue). Also: the white puffer coat, and the shirt with the printed bra/bikini on it. Other than that? Definitely the shoes, which include sneakers, loafers, and plexi wedge pumps. You may want to beeline it straight to those.

One last thing: If you do plan on getting there at some ungodly hour, bring a sleeping bag—temperatures will be in the low-thirties at night. Good luck! 🙂

5 Chic Trends : If You Haven’t Tried, You Need To NOW!

After a stretch of blustery, almost-winter days, it’s easy to get into a comfortable rut, sartorially speaking. You know the routine — the one where you live in oversized sweaters, leggings, and maybe a cape (if you’re feeling adventurous), day in and day out.

Well, have I got news for you: There are scores of other legitimately awesome fashion trends that you’re missing out on. Haven’t worked a leather top yet? What about a velvet skirt? And wedge sneakers? YES, these are all definetely worth the risk!  I challenge you to try five of my favorite cold-weather looks. But, naturally, I’m also giving you the pro advice you need to pull ’em all off in style. 🙂 So, go ahead — it’s time to live a little!

Lace Basics

The easiest way to add both a feminine touch and some modern polish to your wardrobe? Swap out a basic wardrobe piece — like a button-up shirt or a blazer— with a lacy replacement.

Forever 21 Lace Solid Trim Shirt, $13.50, available at Forever 21.

Ralph Lauren Denim & Supply Lace Blazer, $198, available at Macy’s.

Chic Sneaks

I’m obsessed with my Isabel Marants but a cool alternative are these babies for sure — they add a little extra height, but they’re super comfy, too.

Steve Madden Olympiaa High-Top Sneakers, $99.95, available at Steve Madden.

H&M Sneakers, $49.95, available at H&M.

Ash Bea Nappa Wedge Sneakers, $295, available at Amazon.

Collar I.D.
Swap out your go-to statement baubles with a tough-yet-sexy collar necklace. Win some extra style points by wearing it on the outside of a button-up shirt.

DANNIJO Gold-Plated Collar Necklace, $320, available at Stylebop.

Piano key necklaceBanana Republic Piano Key Necklace, $89.50, available at Banana Republic.

Leather Up

Equal parts tough and tasteful, leather (and its faux counterpart) adds a decidedly grown-up edge. Look for tailored silhouettes, and remember, small doses go a long way — leather sleeves and panels are easy ways to spice up basics.

Charlotte Ronson Lambskin Leather Top, $450, available at Shopbop.

3.1 Phillip Lim Leather-sleeved Silk Crepe de Chine Dress, $995, available at Net-A-Porter.

Tinley Road Vegan Leather Peplum Top, $98, available at Piperlime.

Velvet Goldmine

Velvet is definitely having a moment, and why shouldn’t it? Luxe, cozy, and impossibly rich, this classic winter-wardrobe staple looks great in any form.

Mango Velvet Peplum Skirt, $39.99, available atMango.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Galya Velvet Dress, $398, available at Marc Jacobs.

Mango Sheer Under Layer Velvet Top, $49.99, available at Mango.

Maison Martin Margiela X H&M Silent Manifesto

20121111-221715.jpg

Yesterday, some of you may have witnessed H&M sending sign-bearing, fashion soldiers clad in white aprons marching through high traffic neighborhoods in your city. 300 people hit the streets of San Francisco in anticipation of this week’s launch of Maison Martin Margiela with H&M. While San Francisco was the only US city that had the demonstrations, eight other countries like Hong Kong and Singapore also hosted similar marches in anticipation of next week’s global launch.

Hong Kong had a pretty cool concept, they had local actor/singer Shawn Yue shoot the demonstration and I spot a couple of celebrities in the mix. Wish H&M did this in NYC! It would’ve been so cool!

The collection consists of apparel and accessories for both men and women. Releasing on November 15th in around 250 H&M stores worldwide and online. Start making your wishlist, see the products and price list here.

The Maison Martin Margiela For H&M Capsule Makes Models Want to Dance

In case you’d forgotten about the Maison Martin Margiela collaboration that’s headed for H&M stores on Nov. 15, there’s now a minute-long commercial to remind you just how cool it is.

The ad features four models dressed in the capsule collection, two of who stand in a calm repose on the streets of Paris. Another tries her best to balance on a chair in the Lucite heels from the collaboration, while a male model dances in an intersection.

Luckily, there aren’t any traffic incidents — but the sound of a speeding motorcycle whizzing past one of the models brings a little depth to an otherwise surreal experience. A look at the commercial below.
