Jane Birkin’s Birkin Up for Auction Now On eBay !!!

Yes, that sticker-plastered, hung with worry beads, Hermès Birkin, belonged to none other than Jane Birkin, who inspired the bag that bears her name back in 1984. (The story goes like this, according to the Telegraph: Birkin was sitting next to Hermès honcho Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight and after the contents of her straw bag spilled from the overhead compartment they got to talking about the perfect weekend bag.)

Birkin, who has offered the bag up as part of a charity auction with proceeds going to the Red Cross’s efforts in Japan, told Vogue.com, “There’s no fun in a bag if it’s not kicked around, so that it looks as if the cat’s been sitting on it—and it usually has. The cat may even be in it! I always put on stickers and worry beads. You can get them from Greece, Israel, Palestine—from anywhere in the world. I always hang things on my bags because I don’t like them looking like everyone else’s.” She also added, with a touch of Eloise, “A Birkin bag is a very good rain hat; just put everything else in a plastic bag.”

And this is why we love Jane Birkin. As the high-priced bag has become one of the ultimate status symbols, most Birkin owners wouldn’t dare let their bags get the tiniest nick, let alone plaster one with stickers, let it serve as a rain hat, or a cat bed, and willingly let it get beat up. Unlike Victoria Beckham, who reportedly owns 100 Birkins, Birkin says she only owns one at a time and doesn’t pass them down to daughters Lou Doillon or Charlotte Gainsbourg because she says, “I think it would be a horrible thing to have a Birkin bag from your mother.”

If Jane Birkin is your mother I think it would be not so horrible. 😉

EXCLUSIVE: Vena Cava, Costello Tagliapietra, and Charlotte Ronson For Uniqlo: The Complete Collection

Yesterday Uniqlo revealed its latest string of collaborators: Vena Cava, Costello Tagliapietra, and Charlotte Ronson. Today I’ve got images of every look from the collection, plus a Q&A with each of the labels.

Vena Cava

You’ve done tons of collaborations–why did you choose Uniqlo for your latest?
VC: We chose to collaborate with Uniqlo because we really believe in good design offered at an affordable price point. We are Uniqlo customers and really respect the timeless understated aesthetic. The idea of creating signature prints for Uniqlo that have a Vena Cava feeling was a very inspiring design proposal.

Charlotte Ronson
How did you approach this compared to the I Heart Ronson collection?
CR: With Uniqlo I embraced the opportunity to do something a little different, while still staying true to the brand’s aesthetic. I worked with a lot more jerseys than usual to create flirty, relaxed fits, and was able to play around with fun nautical stripes, sailboat stripes and pretty country ditsy florals.

Costello Tagliapietra
This is your second collab with Uniqlo. Why come back? How is it different?
CT: This time around when asked to collaborate they requested we design a capsule collection with the category of t-shirts in mind. We thought this would be an interesting exercise for us. The collection we created is comprised of dresses and tunics, some asymmetry, some gathering. Pulling classic Costello Tagliapietra details into dresses that have a t-shirt-like/summery feel perfect for the soon-to-be hot and humid evenings in New York!

ZARA COPIED PRADA ??!!!

It seems like Prada’s spring 2011 collection is everywhere. It’s on the cover of every fashion glossy, it dominates editorials, and a look from the collection even made an appearance on a cartoon lady in an Airfrance ad. And now the collection is hitting the high street. The window display at a Zara in London which is essentially a scene from Prada’s runway, right down to the striped sombrero (though in white instead of neon). I investigated further and it seems there are many, many pieces in store right now that look very, very “inspired” by Prada’s spring collection.

“The entire store is totally Prada-ed out,” our sleuth reports. “The color scheme includes royal blue, and vivid shades of orange, green, and pink. Crop tops and skirts are striped, as are the scarves a la the Prada mink stoles. Prints are tropical and silhouettes are boxy and loose.”

Check out another photo of Zara’s take on Prada. It’s not the first time Zara’s been heavily inspired by the runways, but did they take things too far this time?

CHARLOTTE RONSON,VENA CAVA AND COSTELLO TAGLIAPIETRA FOR UNIQLO

We already knew Vena Cava was designing a capsule collection for Uniqlo–designers Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock let that juicy tidbit slip at Fashion Group International’s panel on entrepreneurship back in February. But today brings word that New York designers Charlotte Ronson andCostello Tagliapietra will also be among the nine collaborators taking part in the Japan-based retailer’s Designers Invitation Project (the others are Zechia, Tiny Dinosaur, Suzuki Takayuki, Theatre Products, Nine and Double Standard Clothing).

Each designer will produce a six-piece capsule collection for Uniqlo, with each item retailing for just $29.99 WWD is reporting. Costello Tagliapietra’s collection hits stores on April 21, Charlotte Ronson’s on May 5, and Vena Cava’s on May 12. The collections will be available through May 21.

Ronson’s collection–the only collection we’ve seen glimpses of–has a casual nautical feel that’s making us crave warmer temps. “I usually do a lot more wovens, so it was nice to work around lots of different jerseys,” Ronson told WWD. “The feel was a seaside retreat, with coastal countryside as well as nautical influences and whimsical prints.” According to Style.com, Ronson’s capsule includes a striped lace-up tank dress, a striped boatneck three-quarter-sleeve drawstring waist dress, a sailboat print halter and a t-shirt dress with a henley front.

SNEAKER CON WASHINGTON D.C 2011 RECAP

Sneaker Con Washington D.C was the very first time this event had been held outside of NYC and boy was it a success.  Not only did it attract over 2,300 sneaker heads during the seven hour event, making it the biggest turn out ever recorded, but the music and the energy felt here was one never acquired before. DJ Leo Rodri definitely did it up with the music. The pictures below should speak for themselves.  There was also a large adidas Superstar constructed just for the event and it engaged fans to leave their mark on the gigantic shoe- I know I did 😉 (see pic on previous post) Check out the videos I posted on Twitter. 🙂

WOULD YOU WEAR THESE?!?!

As I look at the Nike heels I wonder, ” are they finally catching on that a lot of woman don’t wanna wear sneakers ?” Sneakers can be stereotyped as looking like you don’t put that much effort into your look. But there are some girls that hook them up pretty nicely and even look very put together with their sneakers.

For all of those girls that love Nike but don’t wanna take off those sexy heels- here’s the pair for you.

The rest of you, what’s your opinion on these Nike heels?

Toronto Fashion Week: America’s Next Top Model‘s Jay Manuel Debuts His Line for Sears Canada

Is this what fashion has come to? Last night, host of America’s (and Canada’s) Next Top Model, Jay Manuel debuted his much-hyped collection for Sears. With top dollars spent on splashy campaigns and a media circuit run that would make your head spin, Manuel’s new line ATTITUDE left a lasting first impression.

The show, which ran an hour late, opened with a mini-montage that documented Manuel’s deep involvement with the label, from concept to completion. From sketching to sewing, the clip almost had us fooled that Manuel created the pieces himself, but alas his title still read “Creative Director.”

As the lights dimmed and music blared, the first look hit the glossy black runway and the show’s “special guest” arrived, veteran model Yasmin Warsame . What followed Warsame’s power strut were a string of work wear looks that spoke to the masses. From mundane to matronly, Manuel’s high fashion taste didn’t seem to cross the border.

But where were those references to “worldly inspirations” that influenced the collection? Perhaps it was Manuel’s nod to fallen star John Galliano and the boudoir make-up from his Spring 2011 show in Paris. Although the look was flawless then, Manuel paired the finger waves and penciled brows with oddly belted purses and faux-fur apparel.

After 37 looks, and a model who geisha-ed down the runway, Manuel (dressed in a Tom Ford suit) took his bow to an awe struck crowd. Although some looks weren’t to my liking, others were very striking and perhaps a great new look for Sears.

I am excited to see what looks he has in the coming seasons.  It’s been confirmed the silver-haired host will bring us many collections to come.
