The Best of Tokyo Spring 2012 Fashion Week:

Japan’s had a rough year with all the natural disasters its had to endure, but the country is starting to return to some semblance of normalcy. Tokyo fashion week just ended over the weekend, and we’d say that the mood of Japanese designers for spring is pretty hopeful and joyful.

In addition to a lot of the trends we’ve seen in New York and Europe–like peplum, print-mixing, transparency, and playing with volume–Tokyo also served up a lot of its signature playfulness and attention to detail.

See below for all the highlights.

Karl Lagerfeld To Launch Affordably Priced Line ‘Karl’

Karl Lagerfeld‘s resume has to be into its second bound edition by now, and it’s going to grow a lot more over the next two years. The 78-year-old Chanel designer is launching an eponymous “masstige” line which will be primarily available online, as well as re-launching a higher end collection, WWD is reporting.

The more affordable line, called Karl, will hit Net-a-Porter on January 25, and then Karl’s website, karllagerfeld.com, on February 28. It’s a 100-piece collection which the designer described as “rock” and “street” and is comprised of lots of denim and leather. While denim and leather might seemed aimed at a younger demo, Karl told WWD the collection was “ageless”–and if there’s anyone who understands ageless, it’s him. Prices will range from $95 to $450, so will sit comfortably in that sweet “contemporary” price point. Expect tons of accessories (which the company expects to account for half its revenues) and a new logo: Lagerfeld’s sunglasses-and-ponytail profile, embedded into the “K.” (Will it be the new interlocking C’s and herald the return to logo-mania? We wouldn’t be a bit surprised.)

There will be complete Lagerfeld saturation to support the Karl line:

-Pop-up shops in major cities, including Paris
-Lagerfeld “experience” stores which will mix his Karl line and a new high-end line, as well as all his other interests, like books.
-Social media marketing
-A brand book
-Revamped website
-Men’s wear will hit in fall 2012

As if this all wasn’t enough, Lagerfeld is also getting back into the high-end arena under his own name. He stopped showing his Karl Lagerfeld collection back in September 2010, but he’ll be hitting Paris again with a new designer line called, appropriately enough, Karl Lagerfeld Paris. It will be available mostly in Europe, Russia, Asia and the Middle East, but will hit select stores here in the US. Prices will range from $411 to $3,425, making it an “affordable designer” line, a descriptor that didn’t sit well with Lagerfeld. He told WWD, “I don’t work in that direction. I just want not too expensive clothes that people may like and perhaps want to wear.” He noted that his investors have tossed enough money at him that he could assemble teams in Paris, Amsterdam, and New York.

New Nail Polish Alert: Nicki Minaj Gets Her Own OPI Line

This collaboration makes a whole lotta sense. Nicki Minaj loves anything shiny and colorful and OPI loves collabs with shiny and colorful people (see Katy Perry, the Kardashians, the Muppets).

According to word on the nail polish blogs, this collection should hit your nails in January 2012. Don’t expect a collection full of tasteful neutrals, either. There are two full-on glitters, one metallic and one with confetti glitter. There’s also a purple Shatter and a perfect neon green that we actually love. The entire collection is listed and pictured below. Nicki better bring it with the nail art in the next few months.

Metal 4 Life – a statement charcoal silver hue
Fly – a vibrant aqua blue tone
Save Me – a glittery rainbow tone
Did It On Em – a sassy neon lime shade
Super Bass Shatter – an intense purple crackle topcoat
Pink Friday -a gorgeous glittery pink tone

Leopard Sneakers for Dogs Courtesy of Jeremy Scott for Adidas

Thank you Jeremy Scott for Adidas for giving the world precisely what it lacked: Leopard sneakers for pups, complete with little stuffed leopard faces on ‘em! Whoa! Granted, we’re not entirely sure if these are actually going into production or if they’re just the most awesome styling gimmick ever but, regardless, we love them. And we want them.

And, from the looks of it, the rest of the Spring 2012 collection from the collaboration (called ObyO) is just as CRAZY!!, featuring stuffed gorillas and a leopard sneak with a tail that are totally, totally wearable. SUPER CUTE!!

Doo.Ri to Collaborate With Macy’s Come February

Fresh off dressing Michelle Obama for a state dinner with South Korea’s president and first lady last Thursday, Doo-Ri Chung has been signedfor an upcoming Macy’s collaboration.

Chung’s collection, which hits Macy’s for eight weeks starting Feb. 15, will include her signature draped jersey, knitwear, and art-inspired prints on short- and maxi-length dresses, leggings, blouses, and trench coats, priced $39 to $159. “The customer is very different from whom we’ve catered to before, but I really didn’t have to adapt. Macy’s wanted to keep the design level high. I didn’t feel the challenge was very different,” Chung said.

Chung is the fifth designer to collaborate with Macy’s; although, the retailer would not disclose any designer it is working with past Chung, officials did note the series is resonating and will continue through at least 2012 with other designers.
