6 Weird Fall Trends You Might Actually Like

The last thing you want to be is a fashion victim, but sometimes, trends are an opportunity to test your sartorial boundaries. Because what’s fashion without a little risk, right? Last February’s fall runways had a wide variety of wackadoo looks that left us scratching our heads, as per usual. But, now that I’ve had a few months to mull them over, I’ve decided on six that I feel good about trying out. Leave your inhibitions in the closet… here are the six weirdest fall trends worth trying out. Who knows, you might end up loving them!

Forever 21′s Hologram Fashion Show was Amazing–Is It the Future of Fashion?

On Tuesday, Forever 21 presented their fall collection on the runway. Models walked the catwalk, as they do, strutting, smiling, and then, they started walking upside down. On the ceiling. And then down invisible stairs. These are things you can do when the models are holograms.

Forever 21 is growing globally, with new stores in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing, so what better way to introduce the brand to new customers then with a dazzling hologram fashion show? And really, it was dazzling. At one point neon rain started to fall and models sprung up out of the raindrops.

What’s even sweeter about Forever 21′s hologram fashion show is that it’s for their customers–it’s not, as shows and previews generally tend to be, for press and buyers only. The show has already toured Europe (Vienna, Brussels, and London) and last week in LA at the Grove they presented the seven minute runway show 64 times to approximately 1600 people.

After the show at the we heard some folks buzzing about this being the “future of fashion.” Nicola Formichetti seems to think it is–he designed clothes for Zombie Boy’s avatar for a new video game he’s working on. And Burberry did a hologram fashion show to celebrate their store opening in Beijing back in April. The only thing is, while the shows are visually stunning, you can’t really see the clothes the way you’d need to if you were critiquing them or deciding whether to put them in a magazine. Of course, the exception to the rule is Alexander McQueen’s famous hologram dress, modeled by Kate Moss for his fall 2006 show.

Sure, it’s a gimmick, but if you want to create some hype around your brand and have dough to spend, this is an awesome trick.

Dark and mysterious, very Gareth Pugh. “Infusing his trademark esoteric experimentation into Beauty Powders, Metal-X Cream Shadows, Technakohl Liner, Pigments, Lipsticks, Lipglass, Studio Fix Boldblack Lash, Powder Blushes, Nail Lacquers, Buffer Brush and a Makeup Bag, he delivers an assortment of futuristic yet primal shades in custom geometric packaging.” Definitely going to pick up the Nail Lacquers!

When creating my makeup collection with M·A·C I wanted it to be unexpected – creating something truly beautiful, very sophisticated, and incredibly chic but of course – with an underlying edge of darkness and attitude. With a collection that goes from strong, deep and mysterious to light, fragile, and ethereal, I think we’ve created a truly versatile collection that hopefully you’ll be inspired by and want to wear. Enjoy! ~ Gareth Pugh

Gareth Pugh for M∙A∙C will be available from November 23, 2011 through December 23, 2011 at MAC Cosmetics stores and www.maccosmetics.com.

Banana Republic Spring 2012

Drawing on the success of last season’s Mad Men collection, Banana Republic continues to ride the retro-elegant vibe: on offer for Spring 2012 were a healthy dose of prim ’60s silhouettes and neat mid-century separates. There were white shell tops with frothy peplums, slim pencil skirts, jumbo floral print wiggle dresses, and skinny cap-sleeved tops — smart little pieces just right for the modern-day Betty Draper. Safari-inspired pieces — khaki shirtdresses, epaulet-adorned blouses, and trim military blazers — provided counterpoints of tailored ease. As for accessories, there were square-heeled colorblock pumps, wedge espadrilles with colored ankle straps, and sweet sequin clutches. See below all these pieces and more, as snapped at the Spring 2012 press preview.

EXCLUSIVE: Walk Through Of Versace For H&M Collection By Donatella Herself !

VIDEO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=kdfmpU9NkA0

Need a little Versace for H&M fix to tide you over until the collection hits stores on November 17? I got you covered. I’ve already showed you the entire collection and now I’ve got an exclusive video of Miss Donatella herself to walk you through the collection.

Versace explains how the collection is a history of the brand, highlighting pieces that represent iconic “Gianni” moments. “I know that with the H&M collection I’m going to reach a much wider audience than usual,” Versace says. “When I’m going to see young people in the street wearing these iconic pieces it’s going to be fun.” Will you be one of those young people in the street wearing Versace for H&M?

If you’ve got any questions about the collection, Donatella is taking questions today on Twitter. Just #askdonatella and fire away.

What will you ask?

Karl Lagerfeld to Launch More Affordable Signature Collection in January 2012

Spoke to you guys briefly about this yesterday but here are more details. Karl Lagerfeld, who stopped showing his signature collection on the runway in September 2010, will be back in January with two new signature lines.

Karl, an 100-piece masstige women’s line priced at about 60 to 300 euros ($95 to $450), and the higher-end Karl Lagerfeld Paris line — priced 300 euros to about 2,500 euros ($411 to $3,425) — will both be introduced on Jan. 25 during Paris Couture Week. The Karl line will then make its debut exclusively on Net-a-Porter, with sales on KarlLagerfeld.com starting Feb. 28, while Karl Lagerfeld Paris will first be sold for Fall 2012.

Of the relaunch, Lagerfeld says: “I just want not too expensive clothes that people may like and perhaps want to wear. That was my concept for a long time, but my business partners in the past wanted to be like Chanel or Fendi without putting behind what is needed to be like that … Now I am feeling we are ready for the right job — the way to do things right in a modern, unusual way.”

The Karl line boasts a “street” and “rock” attitude, according to Pier Paolo Righi, the new president of Karl Lagerfeld, and is mainly targeted at women in their late teens and early 20s. It is rife with denim and leather, silvery jeans, and black cocktail dresses with plunging backs. The tags show Lagerfeld’s profile, complete with sunglasses and ponytail, embedded in a K.
